Philippa Macarthur

Sculptor

Philippa’s work demonstrates an interest in components being repeated to create a whole. Natural forms such as ferns are made up of tiny identical fractals composed together, fish swim in shoals, and human individuals come together as families or communities developing their own distinctive identity ‘greater than the sum of its parts’ (the Gestalt principle).

Associated with this are repetitive movements involved in hand building with clay. “I love the feel of the clay in my hands and always want the hand of the maker to be seen in my work. I develop a rhythm of making which I find intrinsically satisfying and expressive.

It’s important to me that a finished piece is both interesting to look at and well crafted. But on a deeper level I like my work to evoke a sense of both stillness and joy in the viewer or handler. Stillness associated with a deeper reality, and the joy of its expression”.

During the last 15 years Philippa has exhibited extensively in outdoor Garden Sculpture Exhibitions, including the Royal West of England Academy and is a member of Cotswold Sculpture Association, the Oxford Sculpture Group and a bursary Award Winner for ‘Friends of Art in the Garden’ and winner of the Bath Society of Art Open Exhibition.

Philippa also has a piece exhibited in the permanent collection at Chippenham Museum, as part of the historic tradition of Bath Academy of Art, based in Corsham.
