Fi Cooper

Potter

Fi’s work reflects a long held connection to nature, and to landscapes both ancient and modern, their history and folklore and is inspired by her love of wandering and exploring the outdoors, and by her background in archaeology.

Creating ceramics that connect both visually and through touch is an important aspect of Fi’s work . From very early on in her practice tactility has played a huge part in her ceramics making, resulting in pieces which are designed to be held as well as seen.

Mainly working in handbuilding she is fascinated about taking techniques as far as the clay will allow, she uses various techniques to texture surfaces - such as using found objects to create pattern and texture. Designs are varied and, though a theme may be repeated, most pieces are unique. Some of her work represents entire landscapes, while others will concentrate on particular elements such as symbols from ancient rock art, seedheads and shell imprints, or pieces which look like they have been in the sea for decades.

Fi Cooper learned her craft taking regular classes and workshops at Oxfordshire Arts. She has exhibited during Oxfordshire Artweeks and in the Dolphin Gallery, Wantage. Her pot “The White Horse on the Hill” received a highly commended award at the Swire Ridgeway Art Prize 2024.
